Does The Government have Your Babies DNA?

July 30, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Did you know that newborn babies in the United States are routinely tested for a range of genetic diseases. As this testing is required by the government, it’s often done without the parents’ consent, or knowledge.

Subsequently most parents don’t know their baby’s DNA is being stored in a government lab, and maybe used in medical research.

According to the state of Minnesota’s Web site, samples are kept so that tests can be repeated, if necessary, and in case the DNA is ever need to help parents identify a missing or deceased child.

Genetic testing for newborns started in the 1960s with testing for diseases and conditions that, if undetected, could kill a child or cause severe problems, such as mental retardation. Since then, the screening has helped save countless newborns.

Over the years, many other tests were added to the list. Now, states mandate that newborns be tested for anywhere between 28 and 54 different conditions, and the DNA samples are stored in state labs for anywhere from three months to indefinitely, depending on the state.

In some states parents can request the destruction of their babies DNA sample, in other states there may be no law governing such requests and little recourse to ensure it is done

Is Home Birth Riskier?

July 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Women who plan home births recover more rapidly from childbirth, but there is a higher risk of their child dying, an international study suggests.

US analysis of more than 500,000 births in North America and Europe found death rates for babies in planned home births were double that of those in planned hospital births.

But the risk was still low, at 0.2%.

UK doctors said the evidence needed to be taken into account, but a midwives’ body questioned its relevance.

The research, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, examined studies on the relative safety of planned home and hospital births from around the world.

Researchers looked at data from nearly 350,000 planned home births and more than 200,000 planned hospital deliveries.

Crucially, it looked at where the woman had planned to give birth, rather than the actual birthplace.

The researchers argued that the safety of home births may have previously been overplayed by the fact that when there are complications and a woman is rushed to hospital, any adverse outcome is recorded as a hospital birth.

Rates of home birth vary across the developed world. In the Netherlands a third of women deliver at home, while in the US around one in 200 women do so.

The Fight for VBAC Rights

May 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

More and more women who had their first child by cesarean delivery are opting  for a vaginal birth next time round. This is know as VBAC – vaginal birth after cesarean. When  c sections were done with a vertical incision  vbac was actually risky, but today the vast majority of c sections are performed with a much smaller horizontal incision and there are few reasons why a woman who has a healthy pregnancy can’t deliver vaginally after one.

Here Dr. Jennifer Ashton speaks to Erica Hill about a new study by the National Institute of Health that reveals the safety of vaginal birth after cesarean section. Notice right near the end she says "usually c sections a little riskier for the mom, vaginal births maybe a little riskier for the baby", as if it is a simple matter of choice. Hold on there doctor, that’s the kind of thinkng that has c section delivery rates at 1 in every 3 births. Watch the video and tell us what you thin.

Pitocin Induction Increases Chances of C Section

April 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

In America, having a hospital birth and having a natural birth are pretty much incompatible. In 1900 95% of all births were at home, since 1955 it has only been 1%. Yet America, of all the developed countries in the world has the worst infant mortality rate. In most hospitals intervention in the birth process comes early and invariably leads to more and more intervention which of itself increases the likelihood of the final intervention of c section delivery.

This video is from a new movie called, "The Business of Being Born". If you are going to have children – WATCH IT!
